Lessons from overseas – Churchill Fellowship applications now open

“One of the voluntary roles I hold is serving on the Churchill Fellowship Advisory Council. I joined in2022 to help shape the Fellowship’s work through the Education strand, and it remains one of the most rewarding and inspiring positions I’ve taken on.

The Churchill Fellowship is a truly unique national charity. It supports individual UK citizens to pursue bold, practical ideas for change by learning directly from the world – travelling overseas, meeting experts and bringing back insights that can strengthen policy and practice back home.”

Founded in 1965 as the living legacy of Sir Winston Churchill, the Fellowship has enabled nearly 6,000 people to undertake international research visits in the last 60 years. The scope is vast: fellows explore everything from education, youth employment and skills, to health, justice, community development and innovation. What unites them is the opportunity to see different systems first-hand, understand what works elsewhere and translate that learning into meaningful impact for the UK.

Right now, sector leader Katy Dorman, Apprenticeship Strategy Manager at Norfolk County Council, is completing the second leg of her Fellowship to investigate how SMEs are engaged in apprenticeships – an area of growing importance for employers across England.

“The Churchill Fellowship has been a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Having already spent a month travelling across five states in Australia in 2025, I am now embarking on the final stage of my Fellowship. In September, I’ve an ambitious itinerary, taking me across the United States and Canada to explore how intermediary ‘brokers’ and workforce organisations are tackling the challenge of scaling apprenticeships through employer engagement.

Seeing successful approaches first-hand and bringing those lessons back to benefit employers and learners in the UK is both inspiring and immensely rewarding. It is a huge privilege to have this incredible opportunity; if you have a practical idea for positive change I would wholeheartedly encourage you to apply for a Churchill Fellowship. The application process is relatively simple, and although it’s highly competitive, the team are hugely supportive – you won’t regret it.”
