Embedding Apprenticeship Awareness Across the School – Overton Grange School

At Overton Grange School, we have developed a comprehensive and proactive approach to ensuring that apprenticeship information is consistently visible, accessible and embedded within the wider careers programme. By integrating apprenticeship awareness across multiple touchpoints, students and parents are supported to make informed decisions about post-16 and post-18 pathways.
A key strength of the approach is the way apprenticeship information is woven into everyday school life. Across all curriculum areas, classrooms and corridors feature subject-specific posters highlighting apprenticeship routes linked to different disciplines. This ensures that students are regularly exposed to relevant career pathways as they move around the school, reinforcing the message that apprenticeships are a viable and aspirational option across all sectors.
Parental engagement is also a priority. Each year, we host a dedicated information evening for parents, which includes a focused session on careers and apprenticeships at Key Stage 5. This provides an opportunity to raise awareness of the support available, address misconceptions and ensure that parents feel confident in supporting their child’s decisions.
Our school takes a targeted and personalised approach to careers guidance. Students in Years 10 and 11 are surveyed to identify their career interests, enabling staff to tailor interventions and provide relevant opportunities. This is complemented by one-to-one guidance interviews for all Year 11 students, where they explore a range of post-16 pathways, including apprenticeships, T Levels and A-levels. These individual conversations ensure that each student receives impartial, personalised advice aligned with their aspirations.
To further support access to opportunities, the school maintains a dedicated careers page on its online platform, where apprenticeship vacancies are regularly shared with students and parents in Years 11 to 13. In addition, physical resources are made available within school, including printed apprenticeship listings and step-by-step guidance on how to apply. This combination of digital and in-person resources ensures that all students can access information in a way that suits them.
Overall, this multi-layered approach ensures that apprenticeship awareness is not limited to one-off events, but is instead embedded throughout the school experience. By combining visibility, targeted guidance and accessible resources, we are empowering students to confidently consider apprenticeships as a meaningful and achievable next step.
