Exploring careers advice and work experience with Northumberland Fire & Rescue Service – Berwick Academy

As part of our ongoing Careers Programme we have sought to develop a wide range of hands-on experiences for our pupils to learn more about the opportunities and options available to them post education.

One such example of this were two one-day visits to Berwick Fire Station, where 50 of our year 10 pupils were able to experience the role of a Firefighter.

Pupils were exposed to the three core areas of firefighting, which included: 

• Search & rescue: A simulated breathing apparatus exercise, where pupils were blindfolded and challenged to locate a casualty using set protocols. 
• Road Traffic Collision management: A great activity which allowed pupils to get hands on with various equipment to cut open a car and rescue a casualty.
• Hose running & fighting fires: Pupils were taught how to “run” hoses and the different methods available to “control” a fire.

Our pupils were also taught about the skills and qualities required by the Fire Service, as well as how these link to the everyday practices expected in our school setting. 

We were overwhelmed to see that more than 10 pupils have now stated their interest in becoming a Fire Fighter and one pupil has already signed up to the Fire Service Cadets Programme, with a view to applying for a role in the next 24 months. 

As a school, the real benefit in investing in these types of opportunities is for pupils to develop a passion for a career and inspiring them to apply themselves fully to their education, as they have a clear view of where their next steps will lead them.
