Lights, Camera, Careers! – Marriotts School

Year 8 students enjoyed a workplace visit to video production company Pearldrop Productions, gaining insight into the production industry and the careers that help bring productions to life.

The day began with an introduction to the business and the different roles involved in creating video content. Students took part in an interactive activity matching job titles to role descriptions, discovering specialist careers they had never heard of before, including Gaffer, Boom Operator, Wrangler and Foley Artist. This helped them understand that successful productions rely on a wide range of talented people working together.

Students then explored different stages of film production, learning about planning, filming, editing, animation, sound and lighting. Team members shared their career journeys and explained the skills and qualities needed to succeed in the industry, including teamwork, creativity, communication and a positive attitude.

A highlight of the visit was the opportunity to step into a professional studio. Students learned about cameras, lighting and audio equipment before having a go in front of the camera themselves. One student read from an autocue, while another presented a weather forecast using a green screen, giving them a real taste of life in the industry.

The visit concluded with a careers-focused Q&A session, where students explored pathways into the sector, including apprenticeships, film clubs, volunteering and further education opportunities.
