Local Partnerships, Lasting Impact: National Apprenticeship Week at Educational Diversity – Educational Diversity

During National Apprenticeship Week, Educational Diversity delivered a series of inspiring sessions designed to raise awareness of apprenticeships and showcase the real-world opportunities they can provide. In partnership with Evolution Ltd, apprentices visited schools across the trust to share their experiences and highlight the value of this career pathway.
Students had the opportunity to hear directly from apprentices, including Hayden, a Joinery apprentice, who spoke about his personal career journey and the skills he has developed through hands-on training. The sessions emphasised the many benefits of apprenticeships, including gaining practical experience, developing industry-relevant skills and accessing clear progression routes into sustainable careers. These real-life insights helped students to better understand how apprenticeships can offer a strong and viable alternative to more traditional academic pathways.
At Athena School, the sessions were further enriched by the involvement of former student Warren, who returned to share his own apprenticeship journey. His story provided a relatable and inspiring example for current students, demonstrating how early exposure to the workplace can support long-term career success. Warren reflected on how spending two days a week with Evolution Ltd while still at school gave him valuable real-world experience, building his confidence and preparing him for his current electrical apprenticeship at Blackpool and The Fylde College.
Students engaged in small group discussions with the visiting apprentices, exploring the key skills and personal attributes needed to succeed in the workplace and within an apprenticeship. These conversations encouraged students to think more deeply about their own strengths, aspirations and next steps.
The partnership with Evolution Ltd also highlighted the important role local employers play in supporting young people. As JJ Fitzgerald, Managing Director at Evolution Ltd, explained, “We’re passionate about providing opportunities for local residents and helping young people get their foot on the career ladder.”
Overall, the activity was highly impactful, with strong levels of student engagement observed throughout. The opportunity to hear directly from apprentices and a former student, alongside meaningful interactions with a local employer, provided a powerful and motivating experience. The initiative not only inspired students to view apprenticeships as a positive and achievable pathway, but also led to tangible outcomes, with increased student engagement in work experience opportunities at Evolution Ltd and the potential for future employment or apprenticeship progression.
