Super Learning Careers Day – Mill House School

At Mill House School, we held a Careers Drop-Down Day for all KS3 and KS4 students, designed to inspire and inform students about a broad range of future career opportunities. The event combined talks from visiting professionals with focused classroom-based lessons, ensuring all students engaged meaningfully in career-related learning regardless of their chosen sessions. Students selected from a range of talks, including those from a florist, a cybersecurity expert, a police officer, a mental health worker, a financial planner, and a veterinary nurse. These encounters allowed students to ask questions, hear personal career journeys, and learn directly from those in industry—bringing real-world context into the school environment.

For students not in a live session at a given time, we delivered targeted careers lessons tailored to KS3 and KS4. Topics included goal setting, job sectors, labour market information, virtual work experience, and self-reflection on personal aspirations—using resources such as Barclays LifeSkills and Springpod. All lessons and sessions were underpinned by the Gatsby Benchmarks, British Values, and our PSHE and SMSC frameworks.

This day was highly successful because it gave students choice, relevance, and inspiration. It supported individual liberty by allowing students to explore careers they were genuinely interested in and addressed aspiration and inclusivity through diverse speakers and accessible resources. Staff supported sessions to encourage reflection and goal planning, making the day more than just informative—it was aspirational and transformational. The combination of live encounters and structured learning ensured that every student could connect with career pathways, boosting motivation, raising awareness, and embedding key employability skills. This was a powerful, student-centred approach to personal development and future readiness.
