Understanding the Roles Behind the Science – Priory School

July 21, 2026

Year 8 students attended an experience of work session at a local bioscience company, gaining a valuable understanding of how many different careers contribute to the success of a scientific organisation.

The visit began with a tour of the facilities and offices, where students learned how specialist products are stored and transported. They discovered the importance of temperature-controlled storage, including the use of fridges, freezers and dry ice, as well as the systems in place to protect products in the event of a power failure.

Students met representatives from a range of company departments, including:

  • IT
  • Marketing
  • Operations
  • Finance
  • Customer Support
  • Warehouse and Logistics

Each team member explained their role, shared their career journey and highlighted the skills needed to succeed in their profession. Students were surprised to discover that, although the company works within the science sector, many employees work in roles outside of science, demonstrating the wide range of career opportunities available within one organisation.

Putting Marketing Skills into Practice

The highlight of the visit was an interactive challenge led by the Marketing team. Students worked in groups to develop their own product ideas, create a logo and slogan, identify their target audience and plan how they would market their product.

The creative ideas included:

  • A digital football tracker
  • An underwater fish tracker and identifier
  • An innovative fan design
  • A product designed to keep people forever young

Each group presented their ideas to staff members, showcasing their creativity, teamwork and presentation skills. A winning concept was selected by the company’s Director.

The visit gave students a deeper understanding of the world of work and challenged perceptions about careers in science. Students left inspired by the range of opportunities available and with a newfound appreciation for the many roles that work together behind the scenes to keep a successful organisation running.

One student reflected:

“I didn’t know that I would like Marketing as much as I did.”

This comment highlights the real value of experiences of work at an early age. By giving students the opportunity to explore unfamiliar roles and take part in hands-on activities, they can discover interests and strengths they may never have considered before. Experiences like this broaden horizons, challenge assumptions about careers and inspire young people to start thinking about future pathways with greater confidence and curiosity.
