Technical education is in the 26/27 spotlight

September 07, 2026

Technical education is finally getting the attention it deserves, with clear messages coming from government that young people deserve both ambition and excellence, whichever pathway they decide to follow. Academic and technical routes are not in competition – they are equal, high‑quality options that open different doors to future success.

In June, Prime Minister Andy Burnham set out his vision for a skills‑led education system that values apprenticeships, T Levels and the emerging V Levels. His argument was simple: if we want a future‑ready workforce, technical pathways must be part of every conversation – in schools, in families and across the national debate.

This year’s T Level results show why that matters. 19,665 students received their results, with a 92.6% pass rate and over two‑thirds achieving a merit or above. Since 2022, more than 40,000 young people have achieved a T Level, and outcomes remain strong, with most progressing into work or further study.

Apprenticeships are strengthening too, with achievement rates having risen to 65.4% for the 2024/25 academic year. Government has placed renewed focus on supporting employers to create even more high‑quality opportunities for young people.

Alongside T Levels and apprenticeships, this year V Levels will emerge as a flexible, exploratory technical route – ideal for students who want sector‑focused learning while keeping options open. The first V Level subjects will be available from 2027 in Digital Systems & Data, Education, and Accounting & Finance. And that’s just the start, more subjects will be added each year.

Families, educators and young people need clear, accessible information to navigate these choices confidently. That’s where Amazing Apprenticeships plays a crucial role – creating practical resources, guides and campaigns that demystify technical pathways, support schools to deliver high‑quality careers education and help parents and carers understand the full range of options available – all available completely free of charge.

With technical education receiving fresh focus from the new Prime Minister, this is an exciting moment for young people and families exploring alternatives to traditional full‑time university.
