Cutting through the complexities of apprenticeships

Amazing Apprenticeships partnered with the University of Hertfordshire to host a ‘Cutting Through the Complexities of Apprenticeships’ event during National Apprenticeship Week 2026. More than 200 students and parents from across Hertfordshire attended to explore local apprenticeship opportunities and to hear from local speakers.

The event opened with Anna Morrison CBE, Director of Amazing Apprenticeships, who explained apprenticeship levels, employers and how to search and apply for vacancies. She encouraged students to use the latest Higher & Degree Listing and Meet the Employer platform to explore the wide range of apprenticeships opportunities available at all levels.

A fantastic employer panel featuring Affinity Water, Jacobs and Herts FA gave a valuable ‘employer-perspective’ on the benefit of apprenticeships for workforce development. They shared advice on applications, particularly video interviews and discussed progression routes after completing an apprenticeship. Employers emphasised that they are ‘looking for the best fit’, encouraging applicants to demonstrate authenticity, enthusiasm and passion.

The apprentice panel shared their experiences and advice. Jet, an Airbus apprentice, described apprenticeships as a ‘rewarding opportunity’ and appreciated avoiding student debt, calling his experience ‘incredible’ with learning that connects to his personal interests. Harley, a mechanical engineer at the University of Hertfordshire, spoke about progressing from a Level 3 mechatronics apprenticeship to degree level apprenticeship, noting he would finish with seven years of experience and no debt. Maisie, a sports business management apprentice at Herts FA, highlighted the variety in her role, saying ‘there isn’t really a typical week’, and encouraged others to ‘go for it, it’s a great opportunity’. Archie, a chartered manager apprentice at Leonardo, shared how much he enjoys getting involved and how much he has learnt.

The University of Hertfordshire’s apprenticeships team, Jane Purday and Dominic Whyte-Ifill, shared guidance on application dos and don’ts, programmes and timelines. They advised applicants to ensure their applications ‘shout enthusiasm’ by showcasing achievements, researching employers and proofreading carefully.

A closing Q&A allowed parents and students to ask about vacancies, how to choose an apprenticeship related to your subject of interest and what skills employers look for.

The event was successful in developing parents and students understanding of apprenticeships available locally to them in Hertfordshire.
